mount chimborazo

Ecuador's tallest mountain

overview

Mount Chimborazo sits majestically 93 miles southwest of Quito, the capital of Ecuador. It is a part of the Cordillera Occidental chain of the Andes. Now an inactive volcano, Chimborazo has a peak of 20,702 feet, the highest in Ecuador. Considering Earth’s equatorial bulge, Chimborazo’s summit is the furthest point from Earth’s core. This magnificent summit features eternal snow starting from 15,400 feet above sea level and huge glaciers. Chimborazo experiences weather changes mainly depending on the altitude and time of day, not seasons. Temperatures average around 25°F. However, wind chill makes the temperature feel much colder. Even with a more chilly climate, many animals and plants still thrive on this mountain. It is home to many types of hummingbirds, alongside wolves, llamas, dwarf deer, and the native vicuñas. Even the condor, a bird featured on Ecuador’s official flag, can be found on Chimborazo as this mountain is quite a sight to behold!
